Cigarettes recycled, no ifs or butts

January 28th, 2013 Comments Off

(AFP, 28/01/13) –  Recycling entrepreneur Tom Szaky is stubbing out the world’s cigarette problem – one butt at a time. The 30-year-old who dropped out of Princeton University to start his innovative company TerraCycle in New Jersey, said there’s no such thing as rubbish, even when you’re talking about the contents of ashtrays. In a program started in May in Canada, TerraCycle collects cigarette butts from volunteers and turns them into plastic, which can be used for anything, even ashtrays.

Britain faces UN tribunal over Chagos Islands marine reserve

January 28th, 2013 Comments Off

(O.Bowcott, J.Vidal – The Guardian, 28/01/13) –  Ruling by permanent court of arbitration in The Hague may challenge UK’s unilateral declaration of marine protected area. Britain’s colonial-era decision to sever an Indian Ocean archipelago from Mauritius and turn it into a US military base will have to be justified before an international tribunal – a process that could lead to the return of the islands’ exiled inhabitants. The unexpected ruling this month by the permanent court of arbitration in The

The report, Global Mercury Assessment 2013, released in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, on 10 January, reveals that emissions of the toxic metal from artisanal gold mining have doubled since 2005, attributable to rising gold prices that have led to increased gold mining. “This report is a

Africa: disasters waiting to happen

December 9th, 2012 Comments Off

(IRIN, 07/12/12) – In legalese, natural disasters are termed “acts of God,” the implication being that they are beyond human control or predictability. So it may have seemed an impossible task when John Beddington, UK government chief scientific advisor, was asked to look ahead to 2040 and prophesy potential disasters around the world. He was asked what science can determine about future catastrophes – whether they can be predicted, when they are likely to happen, and what sensible policies could

October 19th, 2012 Comments Off

(L.Polk – Alternet, 18/10/12) – Why are scientists in alarm mode over the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, a 1,700-mile long conduit that would transport a chemical-laden synthetic oil from the tar sands of Alberta, Canada, to refineries in Texas? Scientists across specialized fields have joined forces to make public statements, penned a formal letter to President Obama, and have even committed acts of civil disobedience in front of the White House during the national  Tar Sands Action . What do

October 19th, 2012 Comments Off

August 9th, 2012 Comments Off

Lavoro nerissimo, controlli zero e
