February 1st, 2013 Comments Off

The 30-year-old who dropped out of Princeton University to start his innovative company TerraCycle in New Jersey, said there’s no such thing as rubbish, even when you’re talking about the contents of ashtrays. In a program started in May in Canada, TerraCycle collects cigarette butts from volunteers and turns them into plastic, which can be used for anything, even ashtrays.

The Digital Disruption: Technology and Economics for the 99%

January 11th, 2013 Comments Off

(P.Brown – Occupy.com, 09/01/13) – Robotic automation is a subject we rarely hear mentioned in all the talk about the economy, jobs, climate change, and other elements of our growing global crisis. Why? Because the 1% dare not address an issue that shakes our system to its foundations. The bipartisan perspective of our current leadership is that our problems are just another, mysteriously huge, business cycle; that “any day now” things will turn around and “we” must tighten our belts

(Jaeger – Occupy.org, 25/12/12) – When a Manhattan court ruled last month that Twitter must hand over tweets from Occupy activist Malcolm Harris following a protest on Brooklyn Bridge, it set a precedent that on-line communications are no longer our own property and can easily be used against us by law enforcement. Perhaps Malcolm and others should have taken some elementary precautions. Obviously, you don’t have to sign up with Twitter using your real name or with an email address

Win friends and influence people

(K.Cincotta – The Sydney Morning Herald,  06/09/12) – Online popularity in the form of a virtual voice can earn you loads of real-world perks. Following in the digital footsteps of ”brain dump”, ”bricks and clicks”, ”netiquette” and ”gamification”, the ever-widening lexicon of hipster tech jargon now has another buzzword – ”Klout”. In a rare show of logic, it is what it says: a measure of influence, the standard attributed to the millions of social-media pundits short-speaking, posting and linking their
